Is Your Home Ready

Can Your Switchboard Actually Handle an EV Charger?

A standard 7kW home EV charger draws around 32 amps on a single dedicated circuit, running continuously for hours at a time while your car charges overnight. That is a very different load to anything else in the house. A kettle or a toaster draws a lot of current for a few minutes. An EV charger draws it for six or eight hours straight, every night.

Older switchboards across Beaconsfield and Berwick, especially anything still running ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, were never sized for this. If your board is already close to capacity, adding an EV charger circuit without checking first is how you end up with nuisance trips or, worse, an overloaded board that a licensed electrician should never sign off on. See our switchboard upgrade page if you already know your board needs work first.

Newer estates in Officer and Clyde North generally have more headroom, but not always enough for a fast charger plus ducted heating, a pool pump and everything else running at once. Every install starts with checking what your board can actually support, not just where the charger will physically sit.

All EV charger circuits in Victoria require dedicated RCD or RCBO protection under AS/NZS 3000, and the work must be done by a licensed electrician. This is not a DIY job and it is not something a sparky can safely eyeball without checking your board first.

What Every Job Includes

What Is Included in Every EV Charger Installation

Free On-Site Assessment

Your existing switchboard, meter box and mains capacity are checked before any price is discussed. If a board upgrade is needed first, you will be told upfront, not after work has started.

Dedicated Circuit and Cable Run

A dedicated circuit is run from your switchboard to the charger location, sized correctly for your charger’s amperage, whether that’s the garage, carport or driveway.

RCD or RCBO Protection

Every EV charger circuit gets dedicated safety switch protection as required under AS/NZS 3000, wired and tested before the charger is ever connected.

Charger Mounting and Commissioning

The charger unit is mounted, wired in and tested for correct operation before you’re handed the keys, including a check of your specific vehicle’s charging behaviour if needed.

Certificate of Electrical Safety

Lodged with Energy Safe Victoria on every job. You get a copy as legal proof the work meets current standards.

Clean Site Every Time

All offcuts and packaging removed. The install area is left clean.

Before You Buy a Charger

Questions to Answer Before You Book an EV Charger Install

  • Does your car need a single-phase or three-phase charger? Most homes run single-phase, but it affects charger speed and compatibility.
  • Is your switchboard already close to capacity with ducted heating, a pool pump or other high-draw appliances?
  • Do you have a ceramic fuse box rather than modern circuit breakers? If so, a board upgrade needs to happen first, not at the same time as guesswork.
  • Where do you actually want the charger, and how far is that from your switchboard? Cable run length affects both cost and charger speed.
  • Have you already bought a charger, or do you need one supplied as part of the job?
  • Do you have solar, and do you want the charger able to prioritise excess solar generation?
Not sure on any of these? Call Pro Fit Electrics on 0417 288 047 for a free on-site assessment across Beaconsfield, Berwick, Officer and Clyde North. No call-out fee, no obligation.

Pricing

EV Charger Installation Costs. What Affects the Price.

The cost of an EV charger install depends on a few things: whether your switchboard already has capacity or needs upgrading first, how far the cable run is from your board to where the charger will sit, whether you’re going single-phase or three-phase, and whether you’re supplying your own charger or having one supplied as part of the job.

The most common job across Beaconsfield and Berwick is a straightforward single-phase 7kW charger install on a board with enough existing capacity. That covers the dedicated circuit, RCD or RCBO protection, mounting and commissioning the charger, and lodging the Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Jobs that also need a switchboard upgrade first, common in older homes with ceramic fuse boxes, are quoted as a combined job so you see the full cost upfront rather than getting a second invoice partway through.

A clear itemised quote is provided after the free on-site assessment, before any work starts. There is no call-out fee for the inspection. Need something else electrical done at the same time? See our full range of services.

Common Questions

EV Charger Installation FAQs for Beaconsfield, Berwick and Officer Homeowners

How much does EV charger installation cost in Melbourne’s south-east? +
The cost depends on whether your switchboard has enough existing capacity, the cable run distance from your board to the charger location, whether you need single-phase or three-phase, and whether you’re supplying your own charger. A free on-site assessment is provided before any quote. Call 0417 288 047.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger? +
Not always, but many older homes with ceramic fuse boxes do. A 7kW EV charger draws around 32 amps continuously for hours at a time, which older boards were never sized for. This is checked at the free on-site assessment before any work begins. If you already know your board needs replacing, see our guide to switchboard upgrades in Beaconsfield and Berwick.
Can I install my own EV charger in Victoria? +
No. All EV charger circuits require dedicated RCD or RCBO protection and must be installed by a licensed electrician under AS/NZS 3000. Unlicensed electrical work is illegal under the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and voids home insurance. Pro Fit Electrics holds REC 32277 and is A-Grade licensed in Victoria. Read more about our licensing and experience.
How long does EV charger installation take? +
Most standard single-phase installs with adequate existing switchboard capacity are completed in a few hours. Jobs requiring a switchboard upgrade first take longer and are confirmed at the on-site assessment.
Do you supply the EV charger or just install it? +
Both. You can supply your own compatible charger or have one supplied as part of the job. This is discussed at the free on-site assessment based on your vehicle and budget.
What safety protection does an EV charger circuit need? +
Every EV charger circuit requires dedicated RCD or RCBO protection under current Victorian wiring rules. This is wired and tested before the charger is connected, and confirmed with a Certificate of Electrical Safety lodged with Energy Safe Victoria.
