Not Every Electrical Emergency Needs an Electrician
Call 000 If
There are fallen or damaged powerlines anywhere near your property. There is smoke, flames or a visible fire at the meter box or inside a wall. Someone has received an electric shock. These are life-threatening and need emergency services, not an electrician.
Call AusNet on 13 17 99 If
Your whole street or block is out. That is a network fault, not a fault inside your property, and an electrician cannot fix it. AusNet Services manages the distribution network across this part of Melbourne and will have an estimated restoration time.
Call Pro Fit on 0417 288 047 If
Power is out in part of the house but the street is fine. A safety switch trips and will not stay reset. There is a burning smell, buzzing sound or scorch marks at the switchboard. A power point is sparking or a switch is hot to the touch. Lights flicker badly or dim when an appliance runs.
While You Wait
If a safety switch has tripped, stop resetting it. It is doing its job. Something on that circuit is leaking current to earth, and each reset hides the fault. Isolate that circuit at the board and leave it off until we get there. Unplugging the last appliance you turned on sometimes resolves it, but if it trips again, the problem is in the wiring.
What Happens When You Call About an Urgent Fault
You describe the symptoms. We ask which suburb, what the board looks like, and what happened before the fault started. If we can attend same day, we tell you when. If not, we tell you how to make it safe until we get there.
On arrival we find the fault first. Fault finding is methodical: isolate the circuit, isolate the appliance or the section of wiring, then identify the cause. We do not reset the symptom and leave.
Then you get a written price for the repair. Urgent does not mean open-ended. The fault-finding and the repair are separate. You are told what is wrong, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs, in writing, before any repair work begins. If the fault traces back to an ageing switchboard, we tell you that rather than patching it.
Common Electrical Faults We Attend
Safety Switch Keeps Tripping
An RCD that trips and won’t stay reset is detecting a current leak to earth. The cause could be a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, or moisture ingress. We isolate the circuit, test each branch, and find the specific point of failure rather than guessing.
Burning Smell or Scorch Marks at the Board
This means a connection inside the board is overheating, which is a fire risk. Turn the main switch off and call immediately. Do not touch any breakers or fuses inside the board until we have inspected it. This often leads to a switchboard upgrade.
Partial Power Loss
Power in some rooms but not others, with the street still lit, is an internal fault. One or more circuits have dropped out at the board. Sometimes the breaker has tripped and just needs locating; sometimes the fault is deeper. We check the board, then trace the circuit.
Sparking, Hot Switches or Flickering Lights
A sparking outlet means a loose or damaged connection. A switch that is warm or hot to the touch is overloaded or failing. Persistent flickering across multiple fittings may be a loose neutral. All three need attending before they become bigger problems.
